Born to be Wild – Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia Canada by Dave Finn

Cape Breton NS – Even if you don’t remember the 60’s***, you’ll probably recognize the riff and some of the lyrics to the song “Born to be Wild” by legendary Canadian rock band, Steppenwolf.  This timeless classic soundtrack was made famous in Peter Fonda’s “Easy Rider” and continues to encourage us in movies trailers, TV shows and advertising to want to hit that open road once more.

Get your motor runnin’…Head out on the highway…Lookin’ for adventure…And whatever comes our way…Born to be wild…

Myrtle Beach World AM

Are You Up for the Challenge? – by Dave Finn

Myrtle Beach S.C. – My knees were knocking, my palms were sweating and my toes were actually tingling as I approached the tee blocks. All I could think about was “don’t make a fool of yourself on the first drive of the day”.

Normally, I don’t get unnerved very easily but I can recall in vivid detail how I felt preparing to lead our fearsome foursome into battle last August. I was playing at the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, reportedly the largest amateur golf tournament on the planet, and I certainly did not want to embarrass myself.

The Best Rain Out Day Ever…Ponte Vedra/St. Augustine Florida by Dave Finn

Ponte Vedra, FL- It is nine in the evening and I am sitting on my second floor balcony with my buddy Steve overlooking the sandy beach, only 100 feet away, while being serenaded by the constant pounding of the Atlantic Ocean lapping up on the shore.  We are staying at the opulent Five-Diamond rated Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, a historic oceanfront gem that has aged very well since its birth in 1928 and, home to two championship golf courses.  Our plans for the day were to play their Ponte Vedra Ocean Course, the selected site to the cancelled 1939 Ryder Cup. Unfortunately the weather man had something to say about that.

Flint, Michigan – A Steal of a Deal!

By Dave Finn

It has been well documented that the economy in parts of Michigan has been weakened by the downturn in the North American auto industry. And Flint, home of the Buick, is no exception. But, for us out-of-state golfers, it means that great golf can be had at a fraction of the price of what we would pay back home.

Ontario’s Garden of Eden Norfolk County, Ontario

by Dave Finn

Norfolk County, ON – For years my best buddies and I would pile into a minivan and endure a two hour drive just to play the Pine Valley Golf Club located south of Simcoe on the northern shores of Lake Erie. For those who do not know, Pine Valley has always been one of the first golf courses in Ontario to open each spring. It was certainly worth the drive to be able to play an 18-hole golf course on green grass in late March while the rest of our fellow golf enthusiasts were either heading to the deep-south to get their fix or waiting patiently in shin high snow for their local golf courses to open.

Golf in Tuscany Italy

Florence Golf Club – Birthplace of Golf in Italy        by Dave Finn

Have you ever dreamed of playing golf among the ancient landscapes of Europe, so steeped with history that you can almost taste it?  Well I can! It’s September and the roads and hillsides of the Chianti region of Tuscany are lined with row upon row of grapes almost ready to harvest. Last night, we’re in Greve celebrating the season and sampling wine and olive oil. Today I played my first round in Italy at the oldest Golf Club in the country.  How cool is that?

Wine, weather & a world apart – Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada by Dave Finn

It has been thirty years since I last visited Kelowna British Columbia.  My recollection was of a small quaint town of some 60,000 residents, nestled along the shores of the Okanagan Lake, completely surrounded by lush apple, peach and cherries orchards offset by the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Rockies in the distance.  What I do not remember from those days was any mention of golf or a large number of wineries that could be toured. Times have certainly changed since the early 80’s.

Secrets of South Carolina – 5 Day Golf Marathon by Dave Finn

Have you ever tried to fly to a destination, play eight different golf courses in five days while traveling the entire length of a State?  Recently, I had the great pleasure of accompanying seven other North American golf journalists on a five day golf marathon in South Carolina.  We were lucky enough to visit three very different regions, two of which were completely brand new experiences for me.

The Desert Course

Come to Land’s End and Experience Ocean Golf at Its Finest! by Dave Finn

Los Cabos lies at the tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula also affectionately referred to as Land’s End. It’s here where the desert merges with the sea and its here where legendary golf course architects including the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones and Tom Fazio were wise enough to allow the natural landscape to dictate their designs.

Get Cooking in Los Cabos Mexico by Jane Finn

It’s just after eight on Saturday morning. The hotel is quiet at this time of day with only a few people on the beach catching some early rays. With cafe in hand I thought this would be a great spot to sit and quietly make notes but I no sooner got settled into my lounger when I spotted a whale spout and then another and another.
