Golf in Primland Virginia

Primland Resort Virginia – A Majestic Mountain Masterpiece

Imagine waking up and stepping outside your room to the mist gently rising from the immaculately manicured 10th or 18th fairway while the sun slowly peaks over the Blue Ridge Mountains. A sight to behold indeed!

I’ve been fortunate enough in my lifetime to not only play some of the most outstanding and recognizable golf courses in the world, but also many of the finest new courses.  Recently I had the privilege of playing the 2008 Golf Digest #1 ranked “America’s Best New Public Course over $75”.   What a treat indeed!  Possibly my favorite mountain course ever!

Flint, Michigan – A Steal of a Deal!

By Dave Finn

It has been well documented that the economy in parts of Michigan has been weakened by the downturn in the North American auto industry. And Flint, home of the Buick, is no exception. But, for us out-of-state golfers, it means that great golf can be had at a fraction of the price of what we would pay back home.

Ontario’s Garden of Eden Norfolk County, Ontario

by Dave Finn

Norfolk County, ON – For years my best buddies and I would pile into a minivan and endure a two hour drive just to play the Pine Valley Golf Club located south of Simcoe on the northern shores of Lake Erie. For those who do not know, Pine Valley has always been one of the first golf courses in Ontario to open each spring. It was certainly worth the drive to be able to play an 18-hole golf course on green grass in late March while the rest of our fellow golf enthusiasts were either heading to the deep-south to get their fix or waiting patiently in shin high snow for their local golf courses to open.

SC - 5 Day Golf Marathon

Secrets of South Carolina – 5 Day Golf Marathon by Dave Finn

Have you ever tried to fly to a destination, play eight different golf courses in five days while traveling the entire length of a State?  Recently, I had the great pleasure of accompanying seven other North American golf journalists on a five day golf marathon in South Carolina.  We were lucky enough to visit three very different regions, two of which were completely brand new experiences for me.

Lana’i Hawaii – Experience the Challenge then Challenge the Experience

by Dave & Jane Finn

Lana’i HI – The title is a bit of a play on words but aptly applies to golf in this Polynesian paradise. Unless you’ve been to the State of Hawaii before you probably don’t know much about Lana’i. It’s the smallest inhabited island in this Pacific chain measuring just over 35 by 13 miles and sits about 9 miles west of Maui but feels like a world away.  Formally known as the “Pineapple Island”, it’s now the place where Hawaiians go to get away from it all.

Hola Lorena Ochoa Gracias

Hola Lorena Ochoa! by Dave Finn

Riviera Maya Mexico – How often do you get the chance to play golf with a former number #1 golfer in the world? No, not Rory, Lorena Ochoa – the #1 female golfer in world for 157 weeks in a row and Mexico’s national icon.

That was my great fortune when I was invited to participate in the Annual Aero México Golf Tournament at the El Camaleon Mayakoba Golf Course in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. While it was only a single hole and a single shot, I understand how Lorena has managed to win the hearts of not only her fellow Mexicans but fans around the world.

Lorena did more than simply lend her ‘Celebrity’ name to the event. From the Opening Celebration Dinner to the charity auction held to raise funds for her foundation and throughout the entire event, Lorena was engaged and involved creating magic ‘Mexican moments’ not only for the tournament participants but for others who did not have the same opportunity that I had to meet her personally.  More on that later…

Laid back in Low Country – Pawleys Island South Carolina By Dave Finn

Pawleys Island SC – The Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand area is a 60 mile stretch of coast line that is home to almost 100 top-ranked courses so choosing a handful to play can be a tough decision.  On this trip we ventured to the very south end of the Grand Strand to explore the Pawleys Island region, best known for its’ “low country-style” layouts.

Almost Free to Golf in Santee, SC

By Dave Finn

Santee SC – I have exhibited at or attended well over a hundred golf and travel shows across Canada and the north east United States and have yet to find a better valued golf destination then Santee.  You tell me!  Where else can you go to stay and play 18 holes of golf with a power cart, overnight accommodation and continental breakfast for $56 USD?  In my own backyard, green fees alone start at $56 and that’s without a cart let alone food and a room to flop in.
